Essential Polo Information
Polo
is one of the world's oldest sports. It was first played in
Persia (now Iran) as early as the 1st century AD. It started
off as cavalry practice with as many as 100 'players' to a
side, making more of a resemblance to a battle rather than
a sport. The modern game was formalised by the British, but
it actually came from British occupied India. It wasn't until
the 1860s that two British officers brought the game back
to England and formal British rules were drawn up and abided
by in 1874.
Polo
is now played in 77 countries although it is only played professionally
in a few, most notably Argentina, Iran, India, the UK and
the US. It has a reputation for being a rather exclusive sport,
but thanks to its inclusion as a university sport across the
globe and its commercial media coverage, it is becoming more
appealing to greater swathes of the population.
If
you want to become more involved, learn something new and
enjoy it more than with just casual interest then there are
several apps you can download to your iPhone in order to get
to grips with the ins and outs of this historic and glamorous
sport.
Firstly,
there is the Polo Glossary. This, as its name suggests, is
a glossary of terminology, equipment, rules and techniques
used in the sport. It is easy to use, allowing you to search
using keywords or just browse through alphabetically.
If
you want to keep up to date with the latest polo news, then
download World Polo Tour. This handy app features open news,
match results, live scores and league and team info for the
three major polo opens in Argentina, the US and the UK. What's
even better is that it's free. This is powered by the official
WPT so all rankings are official and all four levels of tournaments,
Challenger, Cup, Masters and Grand Slam are included.
If
you want to travel to Argentina to watch a polo game, then
download a city guide app from Wallpaper, Lonely Planet or
Marco Polo. These guide will give you snapshot information
without the boring fluff allowing you to find out the best
bars, restaurants and hotels. Link this with Google maps and
GPS to figure out which of these locations is nearest the
polo tournament and you will fit in like a local.
